This calls for a very special quilt

I had a call from my baby brother the other day - he's nine years and five days my junior.

He and his wife are making me an auntie again - yippee! My only other real niece and nephew (ie mine not DH's) are almost 19 and 16 so it's a while since we've had a new baby on our side of the family - nine and a half years since Monster #3 to be precise - shown here in the white and maribou directly in front of her elder sister , the middle one in the burgundy - they both do clean up quite well. This was taken at my brother's wedding two years ago in October.

I'm pretty certain I posted this quilt photo almost as soon as I started blogging - it shows the wedding quilt I made for them which is all hand appliqued celtic knotwork.

As you can imagine I shall have to come up with something pretty special for a baby quilt to follow it - still as they've only just found out and I probably have 'til March or April I have a while to do something really nice - now ................... ideas?

Don't you kind of have to do another celtic knot work project for the baby... (And many other wash and use to death easy pieces quilts.)

I made a wedding gift quilt - not near as complicated/nice as yours, and used the left-over fabrics for their first babies quilt - even simpler...

The parents will appreciate anything!

Oh I forgot - when that as yet to be born baby is a toddler - you need to do an I SPY quilt! Yes, I always put the horse before the cart....

How beautiful is that wedding quilt. Did it take ages? Here I am in the land of the Celts and am afraid to try the celtic knot applique!

Congratulations on the great news of being an auntie again!

so many options for baby quilts, why only do one with all this time :-)

Whatever you make it will be fantastic, I've no doubt about that. I think Amy is right - you need to do a celtic knotwork for 'best' (do people make christening quilts?) and a quick and simple for everyday.

Hi, i have just come across your blog and have been reading it with interest.
Love the wedding quilt with the celtic knots.

It's so nice to find out there is a new baby coming along. I became an auntie again September last year. Jeremy is the new member of my brothers family. We have all waited 10 years for them to have a baby. He is gorgeous:-)

Wow that is a gorgeous wedding quilt! I may have seen it before but I sure love it still!

And how fun are new babies! Wow - something special? I don't know, I usually see those and think - I'll never make one like that!

Congratulations Anne! Fantastic news on becoming a 'real' auntie :)

Maybe you could be terribly clever and do the newborn baby quilt on one side and the I spy quilt on the other and make it a double-sided quilt? That way it can be terribly cute and fun at the same time! And it will add to the longevity of use. You could quilt the 'front' side, as it won't matter what patterns you use on the I spy side :)

The wedding quilt is just lovely. Look at that applique!

Wonderful post!! Do you have any fabric left over from the original wedding quilt? I've made 3 baby quilts from my nephew's wedding quilt so far and now they are expecting number 4 so this next baby quilt will really be scrappy because that's all that's left! Babies are the best thing about a family aren't they!
